Early Christian Church at Phana |
In addition to the remains of the temple of Apollo, excavations brought to light an early Christian Basilica with semi-circular apse and narthex built from re-used stones from the temple. Not far from the spot the basilica was built remains of houses have been found indicating that there was a small settlement near to Phana bay dating back to the years of Justinian I (517 -567). Coins of the emperor Phocas (603 - 610) indicate that in the early 7th century the settlement was still at its peak. The date it was abandoned probably occurred in the middle of the 7th century AD, when the island was ravaged by the Arabs. |
