Fortress of Kambia

| Above the village, at the top of a high cliff near the chapel of St. Paraskevi, lies the Fortress of Kambia. Its present condition indicates that it must have been abandoned early as a fortification post. In addition to the fortresses in various parts of Chios, we also find ruins of towers such as the Tower of Dotia in the area of Pyrgi, the Old Woman’s Tower in Kardamyla, the Tower of Pityos, the Tower at Koila, the Burnt Tower in Chora, the Gothic Tower in the area of Limnis, and the towers in Kambos and the Kambos villages such as Agelastos Tower in Vasilioniko. There are also signal towers in the hillside areas overlooking the sea such as Elinda, Siderounta and Mesta, all fairly intact. Many of these structures indicate that a more general plan of defense must have existed on the island during medieval times. |
