In 1921, the discovery of a sacred inscription, fragments of a statue and tombs prompted D. Evagelidis to make trial excavations in the region of Nagos, near the spring. These excavations were not completed and have not been continued since then. But ruins of a sanctuary came to light. Incorporated in the walls of many buildings in the Kardamyla region are stones which probably came from the sanctuary. From the excavation data, it is deduced that the buildings were built in the 4th century BC, though there must have been subsequent phases, including that to which the temple which stood in the midst of the dense grove beside the spring, and after which the region was named, belongs. |
