The Cloister of Aghios Markos

| The Cloister of Aghios Markos was established in 1886 on the Penthodos mountaintop by the ascetic Parthenios who hafled from the village of Dafnona. the cloister stands on the site of the ruins of a church of St. Markos that was built in 1700. Parthenios led his ascetic life in a cave nearby. The monastery offered valuabe services to the Greek army during the liberation of the island from the Turkish occupation in 1912. Hagiography was developed at this cloister around 1900. Only one monk lives there today. |
